Things to Do in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia with Kids: Explore Cape Forchu Lighthouse

January 11, 2026

If you ever find yourself in the Yarmouth area, Cape Forchu Lighthouse is one of those “must-see” stops. We visited in April, which meant the lighthouse tours weren’t open yet and the wind was doing its best to blow us away. It still turned out to be one of those unexpectedly fun family stops.

The Drive & First Impressions

Cape Forchu is just a short drive from Yarmouth, and the road winds along the coast with beautiful ocean views the whole way. By the time you pull into the parking lot, you can see the lighthouse.

When we visited, the lighthouse museum and gift shop were still closed for the season, but there was plenty to explore outdoors. The grounds are open year-round, and that’s really where the main fun is for our family anyway.

Walking the Leif Erikson Trail

The Leif Erikson Trail starts right at the lighthouse and loops around along the coast. It’s a short and easy walk (perfect for kids) but still manages to feel adventurous. The trail takes you over rocky ground, through patches of grass and wildflowers (depending on the season), and along cliffs with beautiful ocean views.

We took our time, stopping to look in tide pools and letting the kids climb over the rocks.

What We Loved

  • The scenery: Even on a windy April day, the view from the trail is stunning. You can see the lighthouse from all angles and watch the boats coming and going.
  • Kid-friendly exploring: The trail isn’t long, but it gives kids plenty to discover. Rocks, tide pools, and seeing Foggy (the Cape Forchu whale skeleton).

Tips for Visiting with Kids

  • Check seasonal hours before you go. The lighthouse museum and café usually open in late spring and stay open through fall.
  • Bring layers! The wind can be strong, especially early or late in the season.
  • Pack snacks or a picnic. There are picnic tables near the parking area with a great view of the lighthouse.
  • Add it to a Yarmouth day trip. Cape Forchu makes a great stop before or after exploring downtown Yarmouth.

Cape Forchu Lighthouse is an easy, family-friendly stop that’s worth adding to any Nova Scotia itinerary… even outside peak season! With coastal views, space for kids to explore, and a short, scenic trail, it’s the kind of place that works well for families of all ages.
