Our road trip through New Brunswick was full of spontaneous stops and the Aquarium New Brunswick ended up being one of the highlights for our kids.
Located in Shippagan, the aquarium is dedicated to the marine life of Atlantic Canada. It’s not a massive facility but that’s part of what makes it great for families with young kids. The layout is manageable, the pace is relaxed, and the focus is on learning about the local ocean ecosystem.
Learning About Local Marine Life
One of the things that sets Aquarium New Brunswick apart is its focus on Atlantic Canadian marine ecosystems. Instead of tropical fish or coral reefs from faraway oceans, the exhibits highlight species found right off the New Brunswick coast.
We saw lobsters, eels, jellyfish, and more that thrive here. While our kids were too young to grasp all the details, it was a great opportunity to introduce ideas about caring for local ecosystems in a way that felt age-appropriate. We love family travel that sparks curiosity, and this visit did exactly that.

Outdoor Seal Exhibit
One of the best parts of our visit was the outdoor seal enclosure. After exploring the indoor tanks, we stepped outside to watch the aquarium’s resident seals.
The kids could have stayed there all day. The seals swam and dove, occasionally popping their heads above the water to check out their audience.

A Perfect Stop for Young Families
There was enough variety to keep all three of our children entertained, even with their different ages and attention spans.
It’s also an ideal rainy-day activity if you’re road-tripping through the Maritimes. We’ve learned that having a few indoor stops planned makes travel with kids smoother, and this one was a hit.
Tips for Visiting Aquarium New Brunswick with Kids
If you’re planning to visit, here are a few family-tested tips to make the most of your experience:
- Plan for about 1–2 hours. The aquarium isn’t huge, but kids love to linger, especially at the seal exhibit.
- Bring layers. It can feel a little cool indoors, while the outdoor area can be breezy. Layers keep everyone comfortable.
- Pair it with nearby stops. If you’re road-tripping, the area has lovely beaches, trails, and small-town charm.

Making It Part of a Road Trip
We visited Aquarium New Brunswick as part of a larger family road trip through the province. If you’re planning something similar, it’s a great stop to include between coastal drives and outdoor adventures.
While it’s a bit of a drive from major routes, we found the detour totally worth it. The experience broke up a long driving day, gave the kids something exciting to look forward to, and added an educational element to our trip.
Whether you’re passing through New Brunswick on a summer road trip or planning a family getaway, consider adding Aquarium New Brunswick to your list. It’s a perfect blend of education, exploration, and a fun way to help kids connect with the ocean world that surrounds Atlantic Canada.
